Whatsapp Tips and Tricks

Whatsapp is one of the most accepted mobile messaging apps, which offers fierce competition to other messaging and SMS services like WeChat, Viber, Skype, etc. It is widely accepted due to the many features that make sure users have an easy, fast, secure and practical messaging service. Here are some tips and tricks to use the app and to get maximum and safe utilization of the features of Whatsapp.


Hiding “Last Seen” time stamp

“Last seen” timestamp feature in Whatsapp informs other users about the last time you appeared on WhatsApp. Many users may want to disable this feature, for certain privacy reasons. It is possible to disable “last seen” timestamp on both iOS and Android devices.

If you are having iOS device, all you need to do is go to the Settings and select Chat Settings, then select the ‘Advanced’ option and turn off Last Seen Timestamp. If you are using an Android phone, it is not possible to access the settings from the app. You need to use third party software like Hide whatsapp status to disable the Wi-Fi or data connection whenever you are using Whatsapp.  Your Wi-Fi and data connections get reactivated when you exit the application. Whatsapp will automatically sync and you will be able to send messages.

Creating Backup and Restoring Chats

Whatsapp create backups of the chart automatically, however, it also allows you to create manual back up. In iOS, you need to go to the settings and select chat settings and click on chat backup and then select backup now option

In Android device, go to settings, select the chat setting, backup conversations to make the backup. If you want to backup your media files, you need to get the file manager and copy the media files and folders /sdcard/WhatsApp/Media.

When you want to restore the chats from backup, you need to uninstall and reinstall the application. After reinstalling whatsapp, and when you try to start whatsapp, you will be given the prompting to restore the most recent backup. Follow the procedure displayed on the screen to get all the chat back to your screen.

Shortcuts To Favorite Contacts

You will be able to increase the speed of communication by creating shortcuts to the favorite contacts in the address book. On android, just give long press on the contact you want to make a shortcut and from the pop-up menu select add conversation shortcut. For iOS you may need to use third party apps for the purpose.

Changing The Phone Number

If you have changed the number of your Smartphone, but are using the same phone, you can change the Whatsapp phone number without uninstalling whatsapp. You just need to go to the settings in WhatsApp which allow you to migrate from one phone number to the other.  Go to settings, select account, change number and enter the old phone number and new phone number in the separate fields provided. Press “done” to change the number. Once you verify the new number, all your chats and groups will be carried to the new phone number.
